Aligning Your Values for a Life with Purpose

Welcome to the first stop in “Who Do You Think You Are?”, a brand new blog series about self-discovery for all of us busy moms (and wives!) out there that long for lives filled with more than just laundry, lists, and school schedules.

Let’s face it, we’re juggling enough already. But in all the chauffeuring, chaos, and bedtime stories, have you ever stopped to ask: What about ME? Who am I, really, and what truly matters to me?

This series is our invitation to embark on a self-discovery adventure, digging deep into our beliefs, values, and what makes us tick.

Because here’s the thing: when we align our priorities with our core values, that’s where the magic happens. That’s where we unlock authenticity, purpose, and finally, the feeling of truly living our truth.

So, what are these “values” everyone keeps talking about? Think of them as your inner compass, guiding you towards decisions that resonate with your deepest self.

What lights your fire? What makes you feel like you’re living your best life? These are the questions we’ll be exploring together, peeling back the layers of societal expectations and uncovering the path that feels uniquely ours.

Forget the guilt trips and the social media lifestyle pressures. This is about carving out space for the real you to thrive. This might take a while so grab your coffee (because mama needs caffeine!)and a journal, get comfy, and join me on this transformative journey.

Remember, when we align our values, we unlock a life bursting with purpose and meaning. And who doesn’t want that? Let’s get started!

Uncover Your Inner Guide

Grab your pen and paper, journal, or your phone and get ready for a self-discovery adventure. Let’s dive deep and discover the unique “GPS” guiding us towards a life of fulfillment.

Step 1: Uncovering Your Core Values:

Dream Big: Close your eyes. Imagine your ideal life, five years down the road. What does it look like? Feel like? Write down the emotions, experiences, and qualities that define this vision. (Example: 2 years from now I will debt free and self sufficient living a peaceful life on my own farm)

Dig Deep: Now, let’s dissect these dreams. What values support them? Is it adventure? Creativity? Compassion? Jot down at least five core values that resonate with your ideal life. (Example: Adventure, Self-reliance, Realistic, Confidence, Connection, Freedom.)

Beyond the “Shoulds”: Be honest! Are any of these values based on societal expectations or pressure? Circle those and replace them with what truly ignites your soul, regardless of external influences. (Everyone is not meant to be a farm girl and not everyone wants to live far away from conveniences.)

Step 2: Values in Action

Everyday Choices: Think about your typical day. From morning routines to evening relaxation, identify moments where you make choices. Are these aligned with your core values? For example, if “connection” is important, do you prioritize quality time with your family? If “growth” matters, do you carve out time for learning or challenges?

Values in Conflict: Reflect on situations where different values clash. Perhaps “family” and “independence” create tension. Acknowledge these conflicts and explore creative solutions that honor both values.

Real-Life Adjustments: Identify one area where your actions don’t reflect your values. It could be saying “yes” to things that drain your energy or neglecting a passion project. Brainstorm small, realistic changes to bridge the gap between your values and your reality.

From Wish List to Action Plan

We’ve identified your core values – your ultimate destination. Now, it’s time to plot your course and confidently navigate towards a life aligned with your most authentic self. Remember, this isn’t a rigid map, but a flexible guide that adapts to your unique journey.

Start your journey with Goals

Think of your values as your guiding stars. Use them to set SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) that propel you towards your ideal life. Here’s how:

Connect Values to Goals: Choose one core value (creativity). What goal reflects it (learn a new instrument)?

Break It Down: Divide your goal into smaller, manageable steps (practice piano for 30 minutes daily).

Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and reward yourself for achieving milestones. It fuels your motivation!

Boundaries are Your Anchors

Imagine healthy boundaries as anchors or mile markers, preventing you from drifting off course. Setting them empowers you to prioritize your values and protect your time, energy, and well-being. Here’s the drill:

Identify Value Clashes: When someone or something clashes with your values, recognize it.

Communicate Clearly: Express your needs and boundaries assertively, but kindly. “I love spending time with you, but I need some solo time to recharge.”

Hold Your Ground: Saying “no” is empowering, not selfish. Remember, your values matter!

Remember: This is an ongoing adventure. Adapt your goals, adjust your boundaries, and enjoy the ride! As you navigate with your values at the forefront, you’ll find yourself arriving at a destination brimming with authenticity, purpose, and deep satisfaction.

Navigating the Roadblocks

Life throws curveballs, but you’ve got this! When faced with a challenge, identify the value at stake. Is it “integrity” in a tough work decision, or “compassion” during a family conflict?

Value-Based Response: Ask yourself, “What action aligns with this value?” Choose the path that honors your core, even if it’s difficult especially when it comes to parenting.

Remember the Long Game: Sometimes, staying true to your values means sacrificing immediate comfort for long-term growth and fulfillment. Trust the process.

Celebrate the Journey

Celebrate Every Victory: Big or small, acknowledge your progress. Did you stand up for yourself? Express a boundary lovingly? Give yourself a high five!

Refuel with Gratitude: Take time to appreciate the positive aspects of your life, even in the midst of challenges. Gratitude creates resilience and keeps you moving forward.

Reflect and Refine: After the challenge is over, analyze what worked and what didn’t. Did your values guide you well? Adjust your approach if needed, remember, continuous learning is key!

Find Your Crew

You’re not alone on this journey, mama! Surround yourself with a supportive crew who shares your values and cheers you on. Here’s how:

Seek Like-Minded Souls: Join online communities, attend workshops, or connect with friends who share your passions and values.

Find a Mentor: Find a wise and experienced individual who can offer guidance and encouragement aligned with your values.

Build Your Cheer Squad: Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people who celebrate your wins and support you through challenges.

This isn’t a solo expedition. With your values as your guide, your supportive crew by your side, and a spirit of adventure, you’ll get through those roadblocks and arrive at a destination richer in meaning, purpose, and joy.

Imagine driving your kids to school or practice knowing that you are not just chauffeur. No longer are you running on a hamster wheel to nowhere. You are on a journey of self-discovery and alignment. This is the life you’re driving towards, a life of authenticity, purpose, and deep satisfaction.

Remember, never lose sight of the extraordinary woman you are at your core. May your journey be filled with joy, purpose, and endless possibilities!
